Protecting young children from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation is not only important to avoid immediate consequences, such as painful sunburns, but also to minimize the risk of skin cancer later in life.
During the first few months, babies are more sensitive to sun exposure than adults and older children. Their skin contains small amounts of melanin, the pigment that provides color to the skin, hair and eyes and provides some sun protection. You may be tempted to reach for sunscreen, but the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends waiting until your baby is 6 months old to use sunscreen. The best way to keep your baby sun-protected is with shade and clothing. (Even though our sunscreen is safe to use from birth).
Once your baby is 6 months old, it's time to introduce sunscreen. That doesn't mean it's OK to forget about all the other sun protection you've been using for your baby - it's still important to cover up with clothing and seek shade. But as your baby gets older and you spend more time outdoors, sunscreen will help protect exposed skin, like your hands and face. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher (meaning it protects against both UVA and UVB rays). Look for sunscreens that contain zinc oxide and titanium oxide. These ingredients don't need to be absorbed by the skin to be effective, so they're less likely to react on sensitive skin.
